Re: cost of small aluminum welded repair the cost would be very minimal. i would pull the boat up to a fab shop and just ask. i would be surprised if it were more than $50.. Aluminum boat repair is much easier than boats made with steel or fiberglass hulls. aluminum is light, strong, corrosion-resistant, non-sparking and can be fixed with an hts-2000 brazing rod without a welding machine.. This can add another $40-60 to the repair cost, so it needs to be examined as well. aluminum propellers are fairly inexpensive to purchase new, so you don’t want to put too much money into them, unless they are in good overall condition..
A guy at a boat repair shop that i talked to said that he uses 7-ply pressure treated wood, and simply screws them together with stainless screws, and drops it in the aluminum skin. i've read about problems with corrosion with pt plywood and aluminum.. Although we specialize in aluminum boats, we do some fiberglass repair. we have worked on boats of all kinds and makes; from canoes, fishing boats, pontoons, to cabin boats. we will replace rotten floors, carpets, seats, transoms; add storage compartments, rod storage, live wells, seats, lights, floors and more. I just discovered my 1991 lowe 1620v has a transom with plywood covered with aluminum skin. i had to drill a larger hole to run my new transducer through and discovered the wood is all mush on the right side of the outboard..
